Undertoe Dance Project fuses the artistry of contemporary jazz dance with the percussive rhythms of tap dance. Under the artistic direction of Dana Fisch, the movement is athletic yet graceful, aggressive yet smooth and challenges the conventional definitions of tap and jazz dance. Founded in early 2008, Undertoe is active in the Tri-state area in both presenting dance and spreading dance awareness and education. With educational outreach in schools, adult tap classes, and the popular “Tappy Hour” event, Undertoe connects with the community, making dance an accessible, exciting art form for both observers and participants. Undertoe hopes to shed some light on Jazz and Tap, two under represented forms of dance, while also bringing concert dance to those who don't necessarily view themselves as dance goers.
Comprised of twelve female dancers, Undertoe strives to present professional concert dance works in an entertaining and accessible fashion. The technique of the dancers highlights Fisch's innovative choreography. Pieces in the company's repertoire represent a wide spectrum of dance: from fun and flirty tap pieces to emotionally charged jazz pieces, rounded out with the exciting and unexpected fusion work, Undertoe offers something for everyone. Novice audience members will be excited by the familiar music and the explosive nature of the tapping, seasoned theater goers will be awed by the complex choreography and nuances of the dancer's performances.
Undertoe has been presented in many venues through out the Tri-State area. In addition to performing, Undertoe is dedicated to developing adult and family programs to help promote healthy lifestyles through dance by presenting arts-in-education programs as well as working with adults interested in dance for recreation and fitness.
